Sharks Fall to No. 5 Gulf Coast in Tough Home Matchup
Miami Dade ran into one of the nation's elite on Sunday, as the No. 5–ranked Gulf Coast State Commodores used a dominant first half and a monster night from Arianny Francisco de Oliveira to hand the Sharks a 97–73 loss at home.
Gulf Coast came out of the gates firing, opening the game on a 12–3 run and forcing an early timeout. The Commodores controlled the glass from the start, extending possessions with offensive rebounds and scoring in transition off turnovers. Miami Dade struggled to find rhythm offensively in the first quarter, shooting 6-of-23 while Gulf Coast rode a 30-point opening frame to take control early.
The Sharks settled in after halftime, posting their best stretch in the fourth quarter behind a surge from Azjannie Culberth, who scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting and knocked down four threes. Miami Dade outscored Gulf Coast 25–16 in the final period, showing fight down the stretch and stringing together defensive stops that had been hard to come by earlier.
Saige McCloud provided a steady presence with 19 points and eight rebounds, attacking the lane consistently in the second half. Meredith Venner added 13 points and eight boards, while Jazmyne Bynum filled the stat sheet with 10 points, eight assists, and four steals despite a tough shooting night.
Gulf Coast, however, proved why it holds a top-five national ranking. Francisco de Oliveira was unstoppable all evening, finishing with 27 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 10-of-15 from the floor. Kayla Hopson added 16 points and nine boards, and Myla Benton contributed 15 points as the Commodores' size and efficiency created separation early and never let Miami Dade back within reach.
Miami Dade drops to 1–2 on the week and continues its difficult non-conference slate against nationally ranked opponents. The Sharks return to action on December 6th as they take on CCBC Essex at the Gibson Center.
