Turnovers Stall Late Rally as Miami Dade Falls 71–61 at Pensacola State
Miami Dade's comeback bid came up short on Friday night, as the Sharks fell 71–61 to Pensacola State in a physical road matchup that saw momentum swing multiple times but ultimately belong to the Pirates. The result dropped Miami Dade to 2–1 on the season.
The Sharks endured a sluggish start, missing their first six shots before Jazmyne Bynum broke through with a deep three at the 5:57 mark of the opening quarter. That sparked a brief run, highlighted by a Meredith Venner layup and a Constanza Aravena triple in the final seconds, but Pensacola's early rebounding edge and 10 made free throws built a 22–15 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Miami Dade found rhythm behind Bynum's perimeter shooting and Aravena's playmaking, closing the gap to 22–25 before Pensacola responded with back-to-back scores from Tamya Hutchinson and Cassidy Gladney. Turnovers plagued the Sharks midway through the frame, with multiple empty possessions allowing the Pirates to stretch their halftime lead to 37–28.
The third quarter saw the Sharks battle back again. Venner and Saige McCloud combined for a series of inside finishes, while Riana Callihan provided energy off the bench with a layup and defensive stops. But every Miami Dade push was countered by free throws from Amari Johnson and midrange buckets from Gladney, who kept Pensacola up 54–42 heading to the fourth.
Miami Dade made one final push late, sparked by Aravena's second three of the night and Bynum's transition layup that cut the deficit to 55–62. Jennie Gutman added a pair of late buckets, trimming it to 61–68 with under 30 seconds left, before Hutchinson sealed the win on the other end with a fastbreak layup.
Bynum led the Sharks with 16 points, five assists, and five rebounds, while Venner posted 14 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Aravena added 13 points and five assists, and McCloud scored 10 on efficient shooting. Despite hitting 42% from the field, Miami Dade was undone by 23 turnovers and a 43–33 deficit on the boards.
Pensacola was paced by Hutchinson's 24 points and nine rebounds, while Gladney and Johnson combined for 30 points and 15 boards. The Pirates' 27 made free throws compared to just nine attempts for the Sharks proved decisive in holding off Miami Dade's late charge.
The Sharks return to action Saturday against Northwest Florida State, wrapping up their Panhandle swing with hopes of bouncing back and rediscovering their offensive rhythm before returning home to Kendall Campus.
