Sharks Open the Year with Win over TCC
The Miami Dade Sharks opened the 2025–26 campaign in thrilling fashion, grinding out a 93–84 overtime win over Tallahassee State College on Friday night.
In a back-and-forth battle that saw 10 lead changes, the Sharks used a 17–8 surge in the extra period to pull away and secure their first win of the year under head coach Susan Summons, now in his 40th season at the helm.
Constanza Aravena came off the bench to lead the way with 18 points, attacking the rim and going 8-for-10 from the free-throw line. Azjannie Culberth added 14 points, knocking down three triples to spark Miami Dade's offense, while Riana Callihan filled the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, and five blocks.
Freshman forward Meredith Venner provided a strong inside presence with 11 points, seven boards, and six assists, and Jennie Gutman chipped in another 11 points in a balanced team effort. In total, the Sharks had five players score in double figures and shot 47% from the field while forcing 14 steals.
The game remained tight throughout regulation, with Miami Dade trailing by one at the half (39–38). Both teams traded blows through the third and fourth quarters before the Sharks' depth took over in overtime. Miami Dade held TCC to just eight points in the extra frame, sealing the win with tough defense and key free throws down the stretch.
The victory marks a promising start for a Miami Dade squad blending returning experience with new talent. The Sharks (1–0) will look to build on the momentum as they face New College of Florida on Saturday.
