Sharks Suffer Another One-Point Heartbreaker
Miami Dade's latest gut-punch came down to the final horn Wednesday night, as the Sharks fell 67–66 to Indian River State College after a furious finish that turned the last 30 seconds into a full-on track meet.
MDC trailed 34–29 at halftime, but flipped the script with a strong second half (37–33) and looked like it had the game in hand late. A Zayvian Bieger triple at 6:28 put the Sharks in front 58–55, and they kept pushing until Ernesto Rodriguez finished a layup at 4:57 to extend the lead to 63–57.
Indian River chipped away behind a barrage from Adam Squire, who buried nine 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 29 points. After the Sharks fought the score even at 63–63 with 1:27 left, IRSC got the decisive swing when Anthony Ferrer drilled a go-ahead three with :13 remaining to make it 66–63.
Anthony Gilkes led MDC with 16 points, while Rodriguez added 14 points and five assists. David Verstraeten posted one of the night's biggest stat lines with 15 points, 21 rebounds, five steals, and two blocks in 40 minutes.
As a team, the Sharks hit 11 threes but shot 37.3% from the field, and a hot-shooting Squire ultimately proved to be the difference in another one-possession heartbreak.
