Sharks Defeat Elgin by 17
Miami Dade put together a dominant second half to pull away from Elgin Community College, securing an 84–67 win behind a balanced offensive effort and a monster night on the glass.
The Sharks outscored Elgin 46–32 after the break, turning a tight 38–35 halftime edge into a comfortable victory. MDC shot an efficient 50% from the field, knocked down 10 threes, and absolutely controlled the boards with a 46–28 rebounding advantage.
Miami Dade's frontcourt was the difference all night. Leeroy Nijean delivered a powerhouse double-double with 21 points, 14 rebounds while doing damage both inside and at the free-throw line (8–10 FT). Anthony Breland matched him with 21 points, adding seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals in a complete two-way performance.
Ernesto Rodriguez sparked the Sharks from deep, drilling five threes on his way to 19 points, including a crucial triple with 22 seconds left in the first half that sent the Sharks into the locker room with momentum. Jacopo Van Der Knapp added nine points and eight boards off the bench, and Joachim Kouassi chipped in seven points, six rebounds, and two blocks.
The Sharks' defensive intensity flipped the game in the second half: MDC forced 17 turnovers total, including multiple stretches where Breland, Kouassi, and Gamory strung together steals that ignited transition scoring. Miami Dade opened the half with a 12–5 run, then blew things open with a 17–4 burst midway through the period.
Elgin was led by Xavior Gonzalez's 22 points and Maddox Hollian's 18, but the Spartans couldn't stay in rhythm once MDC's pressure kicked in. Miami Dade held Elgin to 25.9% from three and under 43% overall.
A late three from Juvon Gamory pushed MDC past the 80-point mark as the Sharks cruised to the finish.
Miami Dade returns to action tomorrow looking to build on its strong start as they take on Monroe University.
