Origenes “Kiko” Benoit, enters his twelth season as MDC’s head volleyball coach. Under Benoit the Sharks have eight state titles and has finished as the NJCAA national runners-up three times during his first ten years running the program.
Coach Benoit has been named Southern Conference Coach of the Year ten times and State Coach of the Year eight times. In 2005, 2009, and 2014 he was named AVCA Northeast/Southeast region Coach of the year. This year Miami Dade College under Coach Benoit’s command won the FCSAA Volleyball State Championship, District N Title, and was led to a 17-5 record. His team is ranked third in Florida and ninth in the nation.
Benoit has helped numerous former MDC players go on to excel at Division-1 universities as well as in professional volleyball all over Europe and Latin America. Prior to becoming the head coach, he served 10 years as an MDC assistant. During that span, MDC compiled a 336-19 record and won four national titles. The program also finished second a total of six times during that magical run.
In 2002, Benoit was selected as the AFLAC Southeastern Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
In 2005, he took over as head coach, promptly winning a state title and led the Sharks to another runners-up finish at the national championships. Benoit hasn’t slowed down since, continuing to dedicate countless hours, both coaching on the floor as well as coordinating recruiting efforts for the Sharks.
Originally from the Dominican Republic, Benoit has had a tremendous influence on MDC’s numerous international standouts, helping those student-athletes acclimate to life in the United States. A 1990 graduate of American Senior High School, Benoit graduated from MDC and earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in General Education, with a Minor in Psychology, from Columbia College Missouri.
Benoit is married to Olga, a former All-American setter at MDC and Columbia College. They have a beautiful daughter named Angeline Benoit.
