Miami Dade Caps Sophomore Day With 7–3 Victory
Miami, FL - Miami Dade closed out its Sophomore Day breaking open a tight game in the middle innings to defeat St. Petersburg College 7–3.
The Sharks set the tone early by manufacturing runs in the second. Pressure on the basepaths forced an error that brought in Sofia Reyes, and moments later Maria Julia Pedroso scored on a sacrifice fly from Cate Haggerty to make it 2–0 without the benefit of a hit driving in either run.
St. Petersburg answered in the third, capitalizing on a pair of baserunners before Thersea Diez lined a two-run single to center to even the game. Miami Dade didn't let it linger. In the bottom half, Makayla Deleon continued her strong day at the plate with an RBI single to score Caroline Mito and quickly restore a 3–2 lead.
From there, the Sharks leaned into their depth and delivered the decisive blow in the fifth. Mito led off the inning with a no-doubt solo home run, creating immediate separation. The lineup kept the inning alive with quality at-bats as Ebba Sofia Eriksson drove in a run with a single, Pedroso added a sacrifice fly, and Leyani Viruet capped the frame with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 7–2.
In the circle, Ava Salvino provided stability across six innings, limiting damage despite traffic and keeping St. Petersburg from building on its third-inning surge. The Titans scratched across one in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but Salvino navigated through it, and Jaylene Mieres handled the seventh to close it out.
Offensively, Miami Dade produced throughout the lineup, finishing with 11 hits. Deleon led the charge with a four-hit performance, while Reyes added two hits and two runs scored. Mito's home run served as the turning point in a game that felt within reach until the fifth inning broke it open.
The Sharks now wait to see who they'll face in the First Round of the FCSAA Softball Championship in Clearwater, FL.
